Visa Troubles...Heading to California Riverside Mission For Now

Phone Call
Area: MTC
Companion: Elder Riding

We got a phone call this morning from Jaren.  He found out that his visa is still not approved.  He and three other Elders in his district are now headed to California Riverside Mission.  He will flying out on February 28.

Letter he received:

Dear Elder Bryner:

By now you are aware that your visa to Australia has not yet been approved. While this is undoubtedly a disappointment, please know that we are doing everything possible to secure your visa. We will notify you immediately when it is received. We ask that you and your family members not do anything, such as call or e-mail the consulate, to try to secure your visa more quickly. Such actions may actually slow down the visa process already in place.

While you are waiting, your mission experience in the United States will prove to be a great blessing in your preparation to serve in Australia. We encourage you to work hard, remain focused, and be involved in all aspects of missionary work. As you serve the people in the California Riverside Mission, your testimony and ability to teach will increase, you will set the pattern of study and hard work for the rest of your mission, and you will come to love the people.

Both your initial mission assignment and your current mission assignment were made by a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. If your visa is not granted by the time you are halfway through your mission your current mission assignment will generally become permanent.

May the Lord continue to bless you and your family as you dedicate yourself to preaching the gospel to those who are seeking and ready to accept your invitation to come unto Christ.

Sincerely,

Brent H. Nielson
Executive Director

Leaving MTC Next Week

Excerpts from Mom's email:

I'll get the important stuff out of the way first. So I don't see the flight itinerary in my emails but I got a paper about it a few days ago. So I think that means my visa is good. I'll send you a pic of it later if I can but basically we leave on Monday around 8:30 to the airport. I will be flying with seven total the whole way but five of them are in my district so that's good. I am the flight leader apparently haha so I keep being chosen to be a leader already. We first fly to San Fran then to New Zealand, then to Adelaide. It will be cool but a very long flight ahead. I can't wait but I really am going to miss the MTC. I love it here more then I ever thought I would. The hardest thing is going to be saying goodbye to all the people I have grown close to. We had some missionaries leave on Tuesday in my zone and that was the hardest thing. It's insane how close we have gotten to each other and they are gone now. Not as hard as saying goodbye to family but it was pretty close. It was especially hard for me saying goodbye to two of the sisters I have got close to and was not able to hug them. A hand shake wasn't really enough haha but that's okay. Now saying goodbye to those in my district will be especially hard because I spend most of my day with them. I can't wait for Australia but still I will never forget the MTC.

The week overall was pretty crazy and just had way to much going on to tell you about it all. The highlight of me week was on the 19th (was in my journal as 19th but days are blurring together). We heard a talk by Elder Holland and it was about how the worst way Satan can effect us is by binding our tongue. If we don't open our mouths, we can't tell others about this amazing gospel. What did Satan do to Joseph smith when he was praying to god? He bound his tongue but Joseph overcame that through gods help. I know I've had times in my life where my tongue was bound, where I was afraid to stand up for what I believe in, but on my mission, I promise I will not allow this to happen to me. This gospel has become to important to me to give up. I promise to do my very best and to preach his gospel by the spirit (D&C 50). Holland also talked about how some missionaries fall away from the church when they get home. I just can't understand how that is possible. After this much change in a span of a two weeks, I can't imagine the change and growth in two years. Then to just let all of that go; I just don't see how that would be possible. I really recommend watching that talk if you can find it. It's called "Open Your Mouth".

TRC's this week have been so amazing. That is where we have a chance teach real people. On of mine is Jacky and she is so amazing. She is an old lady whose kids joined the church and she want's to take lessons from missionaries to see what the gospel is really about. She said she hadn't had a experience yet before we taught. In our second lesson with her, I testified about eternal families and she just broke down into tears. The spirit had toughed her because she felt that her time is short and she wouldn't be able to see her kids again. The spirit was so strong in the room and it had to be the most powerful thing I have felt so far while teaching. It was powerful enough to make my companion and I to get tears in our eyes.

I have seen some amazing things already and my mission has just started. It feels like I have been here for a long time but in a good way. I honestly know it will get harder but I don't really care if it does. The challenges I have had to overcome have only helped me grow and I pray to god every night thanking him for those challenges.

Love ya momma!
Elder Bryner

Excerpts from Dad's email:

Hey Dad!

So I'm doing really well actually. I'm sort of ready for Aussie, but it definitely is going to be hard for me to leave this place. I've grown to close to some of the missionaries here including the sisters. My companion and I had a hard time at first, but then I think last Sunday we had a companion prayer that was just amazing. I can't explain it, but we started crying and hugging it out and all that stuff. Ever since, we have been a much, much better companionship. He is from Heber Utah, he is a total soccer player, overall a very athletic kid. He is actually way cool and we are like brothers now. It will be good to fly with him and 5 others to Australia. So in class, we learned the lessons one by one and practice on our teachers. Then we do it again and again but each time is different. Then we learn the next lesson then the next. I think I have got most of the lessons down to a science in my head so that's good, but my best teaching happens when I actually feel the spirit. That happens on occasion, but mostly during devotionals and TRC's and stuff like that. So we are done teaching Theo and Makelle and I found out that Theo is a real investigator. He told us that one thing in particular struck him the most. His grandma has been in the hospital the last few days and its been really hard for him and his family. In our last lesson with him, we were talking about the power of the priesthood and how it can heal and our experiences with that. Apparently he talked to someone here in the MTC and next thing we know, he is telling us that his grandma got a priesthood blessing. That blew my mind when he told me that yesterday. He only was allowed to because we won't be teaching him anymore (we have two new ones I talk about in moms email). I am amazing at what the gospel can do for others and I have truly realized why I came on a mission. Part of it before was I didn't want to let you all down. Part of it was I needed a change in my life. Now the biggest part of it is my purpose as a missionary. To bring others unto Christ through his atonement. It will change lives and help prepare the world for his second coming. I have come to know God like I know you dad. I know that he lives and I love him so much its crazy.

I never really realized how much a testimony matters in life. God is always in our lives and we just need to pay attention to our blessings and be grateful for the obstacles. I'm not just saying that because I'm a missionary either. I truly do believe that. I know it will be hard, but I want to to work on your testimony right now as well. We can always make it grow and I promise it will help. The priesthood is an amazing blessing that we don't even think to use sometimes.

I love you so much dad!
Elder Bryner

He was given the 'Sister Slayer' tie. They pass it on from one elder to another based on the sisters. It is a really ugly tie.

I am loving the MTC!

Email #2
Area: MTC

Excerpts from Mom's email:

I made it to pday! It is soooo crazy how much I have learned in just a week. I don't even know where to begin... First off, I am loving the MTC! The first day was a little scary at first but after things got going, it became like second nature to me. I thought waking up everyday at 6:30 every single day would be difficult, but honestly it isn't. The hardest part of the day is going to bed on time because we are having so much fun.

My district is amazing and I've been blessed to be the new district leader of 41A. A really do love them all so much. We all became close on the first day and ever since we can basically talk about anything with each other. It's going to be hard to say goodbye to them in two weeks, because they are almost like family to me now. I'll be sure to send pictures so you can see them all. Even all the Elders and Sisters in our zone are awesome. We don't see them as much mostly just at lunch and in our residence area, but we have a blast at that time. My companion's name is Elder Riding and he is a pretty cool guy. We are growing together and have become good friends.  And my companion, three sisters, and myself are going to Adelaide and the rest are flying with us to Sidney.

So what is my life like in the MTC? Well my schedule starts with scripture study until breakfast at like 8:00am I think. Then after breakfast, we all head to our first class with my district where I conduct our first meeting. We normally have an outlined lesson that always consists of something from the book of Mormon. We have that up until 9 then our teacher (either Sister Simson or Brother Potter) come in and we have class for a couple of hours. Then we head to lunch which is an awesome part of the day because we always are laughing so hard when we have to relax a little. No joke, half of the missionaries in our zone have a huge sense of humor and its just awesome. I laugh my butt off half of the day, even in class sometimes haha. It's safe to say that I'm enjoying life here. It can get a little tough at times, but everyone here is there for each other so its kind of hard to get sad. After lunch we typically have exercise time for an hour. We can play basketball, volleyball, lift weights, ect. It's at the perfect point in the day to have because we can wake up again and be refreshed for the rest of the day. James better watch out, because we lift pretty hard here and I'm already getting bigger ;). After that we have TRC's where we get to practice teaching investigators. My two investigators are Theo and MaKelle. Theo is a tough one, but we are starting to get through to him and Makelle is the sweetest girl ever! The scary part of it is some of the investigators are actors and some of them are REAL INVESTIGATORS! We don't know who is who, but I think Theo is a real investigator. He is to himself most of the time, but yesterday Elder Riding and I got through to him by teaching the Plan of Salvation. It was a big moment for us when he opened up. For the next hour and a half after TRC's we prepare for our next meeting with the investigators. After that we go to dinner then to class again for like 3 hours. Then to our residence at 9pm for a short devotional with our Elders in our zone. We pretty much can do what we want to until 10:30 after that. We always have a blast at the end of the day, probably more fun then we should honestly hahaha. I always end the day with reading the scriptures for a bit and a prayer. Well that's my typical day. I think I got that all right haha, but it really switches up every now and then.

The days are long, but the weeks are short. It's so weird how that works and I can't really explain it. I haven't gone one day yet without having a crazy spiritual moment. There is always one time during the day where the spirit hits my like a freight train and when it hits me like that I can admit I get a little emotional. It will normally be the same moment for others in my district, so we all cry together at least once a day LOL. Don't worry mom its more of a happy cry. I can't express how much I love these guys.

Sister Perkins started writing down the funniest quotes throughout the day and she is reading it back to us right now. It's crazy how funny we all can be while at the same time be so spiritual. I'll try to send you a couple quotes every now and then.

Here are a couple:
"I was so excited to get a letter form my family, but it was just my tax form." -Sister Wirthlin
"WWEED= What would Elder England do?"
"Are you guys happy...? You need to notify your faces." -Pres Hall
"Kansas City, Missouri? Is that even a real place?" -Elder Heaton
Elder Riding asks the class how he can teach better and I answer "Try to have the spirit involved.... I guess."

They might not sound as funny reading them but in the moment these were soooo funny. So know I'm doing just fine, better then fine. I have the lord with me 24/7. Love you all so much! Have a amazing week!

Second Email
Hey mom we just got back from the temple. We did an endowment session there. So I forgot to explain the pictures. So a lot of them are of my residence hall and us just chillin. The group photo is with my district. On the top row that is Elder Britonba, Brimily, Riding (my comp), me, England, and Heaton. On the bottom that is Sister Wirthlin, Perkins, Nybo, Jackman, and Washburn. Then the sister in the purple shirt doing the peace sign is my favorite haha. Her name is Sister Smith. As you can see on the pic of my desk, I got a lot of packages haha mostly just candy and stuff. Anyway I'm headed to dinner at 5:10, so this is the last time I can email you. Email me before then if you can. If not, see you next Thursday mom!

Excerpts from Dad's email:

Hey Dad!! Dude I can't even express how much I've grown in the past week. I really hope you are proud of me. You and James are my role models. It was through your example that I learned that a mission was right for me. Now I have to gain a testimony for myself. I want you to know that I know that God lives and that I do has a testimony. That is why I am here. I won't really have a chance to write you a lot in this email, but I told mom in her's about my week so that's for the both of you this week haha. If I have time later today I'll try to write you a bit more because I really do have so much to talk about already this week.  Anyway I want you to remember you are always in every one of my prayers. Idk what I would do without you. The only time I have time to be homesick is right now writing and I'll admit, writing right now is hard emotionally. It's the only time I have time to even get that way though haha, so its no harm it kind of is refreshing.

Love you pops
Your boy, Elder Bryner

First email from MTC: I Made It!!

Email #1
Area: MTC

Mom's email:

Hey Mom!

I know I am emailing you only about an hour or so after I saw you but it is because my next chance to email you will be next Thursday. I can already tell that I am going to have an amazing time here and I'm not just saying that. Right when I walked in the door, everyone was so nice and understanding. I've already had the chance to talk to a couple of missionaries who have been here for at least a week and they all tell me it is not as hard as I think. There will be challenges but over all I think I will have an amazing time here. My companion has not arrived here yet so I haven't met him but the picture I saw makes me think he will be a cool guy. I can tell he won't be one of these weird guys haha. Really though you don't have to worry at all for at least the next three weeks because there are people everywhere helping me and I'm going at my own pace. My classroom is smaller then I expected but my classmates so far are all so nice. The MTC campus is pretty cool so far and the orientation video helped me understand what I will be up to. My guide told me my room is much nicer then his because I got one of the new rooms and only have 4 roommates. This will be hard at times but I know I'll be comfortable and overall I'm way excited. I really hope you aren't taking it to hard. Please don't worry about me to much. This is gonna have to be a short email this time but I promise I'll let you know how I'm doing next Thursday. Hang in there mom! Show everyone this email so they know I'm alright cause I can't I don't have much else to talk about.

Love your boy, Elder Bryner

The MTC in Provo

Today we dropped Jaren off at the MTC.  We got an early start and headed down to Provo.  He needed to be there by 12:30, so we wanted plenty of time to eat and say our goodbyes one last time. Jaren wanted to go eat one last time at Cafe Rio.

While we were there, other missionaries and their families came in to eat. It was really cool to see all these young elders and sister anxious, but excited to serve.  One sister that came in, just got home that day.  She we very energetic and full of love.  She came over to our table and talked to Jaren for a little bit wishing him well.

After we went over to the Provo temple to walk around and take pictures.  It was a beautiful day as we walked around the grounds and talked.

Meeting Jaren's host. He helped him get his bags.
He said "Let me get your bags and we'll get you
in to get your books and onto you first class."

Saying goodbye to Jaela

Saying good by to dad

Saying goodbye to mom

Jaren is the one in the dark suit with is host next to the
big tall tree, they are almost walking in the building.
